There’s a dangerous assumption that spiritual awareness is the same as spiritual safety. It isn’t. Here’s why.
The Three States
The people who are spiritually dormant get possessed. Those who are spiritually aware but not tending to the Holy Spirit also offer themselves up for some form of possession — but in this case clandestinely. They become a conduit.
They tend to operate in a state they will think is self-awakening, and this consciousness will also be channelled towards things tending away from the Father.
The Enemy’s Mission
Remember: the sole responsibility of evil spirits is to either not make man know or believe in God, or make their knowledge of God ineffective.
What the Spirit Is
The spirit is always seeking expression because that is the actual man. It is not that it was limited on purpose here on earth.
Man was an archetype of God — “Let us make man in our own image” — made to exercise dominion. Perhaps I could say at a lower cadre, but still in the form and sample of God.
But somehow he subjected himself to falsehood and broke a law, and God had to bring a spiritual mystery from the archives to redeem him (Ephesians 1).
Two Natures
The nature of what is not God is that it looks for a chance to dominate that person. But what is of God requires patience but guarantees peace.
Awareness Is Not Enough
There’s a category of person who is spiritually awake — they sense the unseen world, they have discernment, they know something is real — but they do not tend the Holy Spirit within them. They mistake being awake for being filled.
This is the most dangerous state because it feels like enlightenment. But an empty vessel that is aware it’s a vessel will still be filled by whatever is nearest. If the Holy Spirit is not occupying that awareness, something else will — and quietly.
What “Tended” Actually Means
This must be answered clearly: tended by what? And tended toward what?
- Tended by the Holy Spirit — He is the gardener of the human spirit.
- Tended toward the Holy Spirit — active orientation through prayer, Word, fellowship, communion.
- Tended how — the same way you tend a fire: you feed it, guard it, keep it from being smothered. It is not passive. It requires patience, daily attention.
Here is the critical distinction:
Spiritual awareness = the faculty is awake, like a radio receiving signals. Tending the Holy Spirit = the faculty is tuned to the right frequency and actively maintained there.
Awareness without tuning means the radio picks up any signal — including the wrong one. The person mistakes signal strength (heightened awareness) for signal source (the Holy Spirit). This is how clandestine possession works: the person feels more “spiritual” but is being fed from the wrong source.
Tending is not a static state. You do not arrive at “tended” and stay there. Neglect is not neutral — neglect is reversion to the untended state.
The Enemy’s Strategy
The evil spirit’s objective is binary:
- Keep you from knowing God at all.
- If you know God, make that knowledge ineffective.
Strategy 2 is far more common among those who are spiritually aware but untended. They have the knowledge but not the fellowship. They can discern but they cannot resist. Their awareness becomes a liability because it opens them to a more sophisticated occupancy.
Why the Spirit Must Express
The spirit is the real person — the part that returns to God at death (Ecclesiastes 12:7). It is designed for expression, for communion, for dominion. Before the fall, that expression found its home in God. After the fall, man became a vacuum — and vacuums get filled.
The redemption in Ephesians 1 isn’t just a legal transaction. It’s a restoration of the spirit’s rightful occupant. The Holy Spirit doesn’t dominate — He indwells. Domination requires force. Indwelling requires invitation.
Two Natures
What is not God dominates. What is of God indwells.
Domination is impatient. It pushes, controls, occupies. Indwelling is patient — it waits for tending. But its guarantee is peace, not coercion.
If your spiritual life feels like you’re being driven rather than led — if your awareness produces restlessness, not peace — it may be time to ask who is occupying that awakened space.
